Taser training

Dewayne Smith, center, an investigator with the Vicksburg Police Department, makes a face after being shot with a Taser during a training session Tuesday. Shooting the Taser and pulling the barbs from Smith’s back, at right, is trainer Sgt. John Elfer of the Warren County Sheriff’s Department. Holding Smith up are police officers Gary Cooper, left, and Cleon Butler. The Vicksburg Police Department has 12 Tasers, and are ordering 14 more — each at a cost of about $1,300. A Taser is a weapon that causes temporary paralysis through barbs that deliver a debilitating shock. They are used in law enforcement to subdue suspects. Police Chief Walter Armstrong said the Tasers wouldn’t be used on the street until all officers are trained.
