AmeriCorps volunteer Amber Matthews, 20, of Milwaukee, concentrates during an origami class Thursday. The group, which came to Vicksburg in 2009 and lives at the former All Saints’ school on Confederate Avenue, just returned from service projects and is taking some time for transitional training. Classes include ballroom dancing, boot-shining, personality-testing, personal finance and public speaking. Members, ages 18 to 24, must work 1,700 volunteer hours and 80 independent hours throughout their 10-month service. At the end, they receive a $5,350 education award. About 160 volunteers in the National Civilian Community Corps Southern Region are living in Vicksburg, with that number to grow to 400 as new volunteers arrive.
