St. Aloysius’ playoff chances were dashed with a tough road loss at Mount Olive on Friday night.

The Pirates, ranked fourth in Class 1A, scored 32 first-half points and earned a 46-0 win. Mount Olive maintains second place in Region 4-1A at 3-1 after Cathedral (5-0) routed Bogue Chitto 47-21.

The Pirates are now 5-4 overall. St. Al falls to 3-6 overall and 1-4 in region play with just two games to play, including the school’s 150th anniversary game next week at Balzli Field against winless West Lincoln.

Flashes coach B.J. Smithhart said his team had a promising drive early, but when the Pirates stopped them on fourth down, the game got away from his team.

“We came out flat and they got up on us,” Smithhart said as the Pirates scored two touchdowns in the first quarter to go up 12-0.

“We had a good drive early in the game,” Smithhart. “We had a fourth-down play, went for it, and didn’t get it. They went down and scored, we fumbled our next possession and then they scored again. Once we fell behind two scores, it was tough. We just didn’t tackle very well.”

Mount Olive scored three touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 32-0 lead into the half.

The Saints, ranked No. 1 in MAIS Academy A, had little difficulty staying perfect and clinching the District 6-A title against the Trojans (4-6).

Kent King and Tip McKenzie led Trinity’s scoring with three touchdowns each. McKenzie scored on a 61-yard punt return, a 31-yard interception return and a 6-yard run. King had a 51-yard touchdown run and two 12-yard runs.

Tallulah didn’t score until the fourth quarter, when Cody Landrem carried the ball 34 yards for a score. Hunter Windham followed with an remarkable 94-yard hail mary pass to Cody Petty.

Windham threw for 129 yards. Petty caught four passes for 120 yards and Landrem rushed for 52 yards.
