Get to the polls

I am sure each of us has experienced being stopped by a school bus either picking children up in the morning or dropping them off in the afternoon. Rather than being perturbed by having to stop every few hundred feet, have you ever wondered whether or not those children had a productive day? Did they learn something of value? Are they able to compete with children from other nations? Are they going to have the confidence to one day rise and take control?

If you contemplate those questions, your next logical question should be whether you are doing your part to ensure that this city, county, state and nation are left in a better position than how you discovered and experienced them. One way to ensure this is by actively participating in government. The first step is to register to vote. The second step is to vote.

On behalf of the 65-plus members of the Mu Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., I would like to take this opportunity to encourage each of you to go to the polls on Nov. 2.

Whether you are a Republican, Democrat or Independent, we all have a vested interest in the perpetuity of our city, county, state and nation. Be reminded of that quote often attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson (but has been disputed) that says, “To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”

To my fellow residents, success starts by learning and is followed up with taking initiative. We all have some idea and hope of how we want government to work for us. However, we must first do our part by putting those people of our choice in positions in order to make government work for us.

Earlier in the year, our chapter encouraged you to participate in the Census. Now, we encourage you to go to the polls on Nov. 2. Do it for yourself, and do it for our children.
