Koury Davis had a first quarter to remember against Raymond.
The lanky 6-foot-4 sophomore scored 13 points in the first quarter, most of them from behind the 3-point arc, to propel the Vikings (4-1) to a victory over visiting Raymond.
He finished with a game-high 25 points, nine rebounds, five steals, two assists and a block, part of a balanced scoring effort from a young Viking squad. Jeremey Harper added 14 points and Louis Carson contributed 12.
“That’s what we’re looking for from him,” WC coach Jesse Johnson said. “We need him to lead us offensively and defensively. He’s rebounding and scoring from the guard position for us.”
When asked about the secret to the Vikings’ success so far this season, Johnson had a simple answer.
“It’s all about having the players,” Johnson said. “We’re very young and very talented. It was pure hustle that got us through that one. I think we were equally matched as far as talent was concerned. We outhustled them down the stretch.”
The Vikings led throughout, but Raymond made it a two-possession game when Johnathan McGee hit a driving layup through the heart of the WC defense with just over two minutes remaining.
But Eric Howard got a key steal on the next Raymond possession and, even though he wasn’t able to convert a plus-one opportunity, the answering bucket shifted the momentum and the Vikings pulled away.
