Police arrest man suspected of shooting Southern Miss players

HATTIESBURG (AP) — Hattiesburg police on Friday night arrested a man suspected in the shooting of three University of Southern Mississippi football players.

Travis “Taurus” Brown, 29, is believed to have shot Martez Smith, 22, of Canton, Tim Green, 21, of Columbia, S.C., and Deddrick Jones, 23, of Bastrop, La., in the parking lot of Remington’s Hunt Club on North 31st Avenue, off U.S. 49 North.

Three people had already been arrested in connection with the shooting. Cleothus Wilkerson, 25, and Patricia L. Brown, 49, both of Bassfield, were arrested on Tuesday. Both are charged with three counts of accessory after the fact to aggravated assault. Bond was set at $1.5 million for each on Wednesday.

A third person, Van Allen Myers, 23, of Prentiss, was arrested Wednesday and charged with three counts of accessory before the fact of an aggravated assault.

The shooting happened after the Golden Eagles returned home last Saturday after a victory over Central Florida. All three players remain in the hospital. Smith is paralyzed from the waist down.
