HATTIESBURG — The nightclub where there University of Southern Mississippi football players were shot a week ago is back open after being shut down temporarily by the city.
Chancery Judge Sebe Dale ruled Friday that Mayor Johnny Dupree could not suspend the license of Remington’s Hunt Club. Dale granted a temporary order keeping the North 31st Avenue club open, and will hold a hearing Dec. 8 to decide what happens next.
DuPree said the city will obey the judge’s ruling, but won’t change plans to crack down on nightclub violence.
Linebackers Martez Smith, 22, of Canton, and Tim Green, 21, of Columbia, S.C., along with defensive lineman Deddrick Jones, 23, of Bastrop, La., were shot early Nov. 14 at the club, located a few miles north of the USM campus. The three had been celebrating a Nov. 13 victory over Central Florida.
Smith is paralyzed from the waist down after his spine was damaged; Green was shot in the neck and can’t speak; and Jones was shot in the chest. The players are being treated at Forrest General Hospital.
At least four people have been arrested in the shootings.
The accused shooter, Travis “Taurus” Brown, 29, of Prentiss, was arrested Friday night and charged with three counts of aggravated assault. It was unclear if bond had been set.
Brown’s mother, Patricia L. Brown, 49, and Cleothus Wilkerson, 25, are each charged with three counts of accessory after the fact to aggravated assault. The two, both of Bassfield, were being held on $1.5 million bond each.
Van Allen Myers, 23, of Prentiss, is charged with three counts of accessory before the fact to aggravated assault. His bond was set at $500,000.
