Kitchen fire forces evacuation of apartment building

Residents of Magnolia Manor on Manor Drive were evacuated Wednesday after a kitchen fire smoked up a second-floor apartment.

No injuries were reported in the blaze reported at 1 p.m.

Vicksburg Fire Department Battalion Chief Craig Danczyk said the fire started in an apartment where a pot had been left on the stove.

He said the wall around the stove was damaged.

Three fire trucks and an ambulance stayed on scene for about an hour while large fans blew smoke from the four-story building where most of the tenants are elderly.

“We are spending more time on this because of the nature of the facility,” Danczyk said.

Two in county jail for probation violation

Two men were in the Warren County Jail without bond Wednesday afternoon charged with probation violation.

• Donnell Johnson, 23, 1005 Country Club Drive, Jackson, was arrested by Mississippi Department of Corrections at 10:30 a.m.

• Peter Haggard, 40, 170 Curry St., was arrested by MDOC around noon.

Two wrecks leave two injured

A teenager and a man from Vicksburg were taken to the hospital Tuesday after two separate accidents.

Ashton DeRossette, 15, 3003 Drummond St., was in a two-car wreck on Lee Road just after 3 p.m. Tuesday and taken to River Region Medical Center.

Derrick Carter, 30, 220 Hillside Drive, was driving on Iowa Boulevard around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday when his car veered off the road and hit a telephone pole.

Condition reports from the hospital were not available.
