The Missy Gators went 13 minutes with just a single point, but still found a way to win by 12 over the Lady Vikes.

Montevallo signee Donyeah Mayfield was big, pacing Vicksburg with 19 points and 16 rebounds as the Missy Gators (5-3) won their Division 4-6A opener.

Mayfield said the key was coming back from a dismal third quarter when Vicksburg missed all 11 shots from the field and committed seven turnovers.

“We couldn’t buy a shot in the third quarter,” Mayfield said. “Shaniqua Butler handled the ball well for us and Aleesha Smith made some big shots.”

Vicksburg led 16-11 after one quarter. The Missy Gators hit six of their first eight shots to start the second quarter and build a 28-13 lead. A free throw by Shanequa Hill, however, was the only point for the Missy Gators over the last five minutes of the second quarter and all of the third. WC (2-8, 0-1) could not capitalize.
