Despite a lagging economy, the United Way of West Central Mississippi reached 93 percent of its $1.415 million goal.
“I think the results are amazing with the economy the way it is,” Executive Director Barbara Tolliver said.
“I anticipated a lower goal given the economy, and I was pleased we achieved 93 percent of our goal,” she said.
Throughout 2010, volunteers raised $1,321,760. In 2009, the $1.4 million goal was exceeded by 4 percent.
About $722,327 will be dispersed among 21 agencies in Warren, Claiborne, Sharkey, Issaquena and Yazoo counties in Mississippi, and Madison Parish in Louisiana; $203,353 will be given to national and local agencies; and the remainder will be used to cover administrative costs, Tolliver said.
