The U.S. 80 bridge across the Mississippi River remained in “fair-to-very good condition” in 2010, according to authors of its annual stability report.

Though the conclusion on an early version of this year’s study is the same as the past three years, some suggestions on how to address long-term repairs to the rail track might appear in a final version before commissioners officially accept it.

Pier 2, the first large support pier from the Mississippi bank, moved little in a year’s time after more than 9 inches of westerly movement has been noted in several inspection reports during the past 15 years.

“I’m happy to report pier 2 — for the past two years — has essentially stayed within a half-inch in its position,” said Rudy McLellan of Baton Rouge-based G.E.C., the commission’s inspection firm. Other piers nearest the east bank, need to be raised about 2 inches, he said.

Bracing along rail tracks, in need of repair for years, might prompt commissioners to put up flags or speed limit signs for trains, McLellan said.

Work to repair cracks and re-anchor beams above pier 5 is nearly complete, superintendent Herman Smith said. About $10,000 of the $637,754 for Shiloh Contractors is being held until complete, Smith said.
