A close-knit group of students at Beechwood Elementary School is making an artsy, and possibly charitable, statement to remember their teacher who died of breast cancer and raise money to fight the disease.
The Knit Wits, all girls in the sixth grade, spend their recess time daily knitting and selling their wares — bracelets, lanyards and scarves — with profits headed to Relay for Life. They plan to sell more during the annual Warren County fundraiser for the American Cancer Society that is set for April 29 this year.
“It is just such a great cause and you don’t have to be big or special to help,” said Mary Elizabeth Ballard, the 12-year-old who had the idea for the fundraising effort. “We’ve just been knitting our little brains out.”
