Meeting Thursday:

• Approved the minutes of the Dec. 9 regular meeting and Jan. 14 called meeting.

• Accepted donations in cash: for Vicksburg High School, $100 from Atwood Chevrolet for the boys’ basketball program; for Redwood Elementary School, a $1,500 grant from the International Paper Foundation to purchase educational materials on recycling; and for Vicksburg Intermediate School, $1,000 from Owensville Communication-WVBG to the Young Singers as winners in choral competition; and in equipment: for the VHS science department, two Olympus microscopes valued at $1,650 each from Mrs. Gwen Bingham.

• Approved amendments to the 2010-11 budget.

• Approved accounts payable claims docket for January.

• Approved personnel matters: compensation for extra duties, December; certified staff hires; certified staff change in status; recommendations for substitutes; and classified personnel staff hires.

• Approved out-of-state travel for: VHS girls’ softball team to play in a tournament in Alexandria, La., March 19; Warren Central High School track team to compete in the Super 1 Relays in Monroe, La., March 5; WCHS JROTC to participate in a drill meet at Southern University in Baton Rouge Feb. 19; VHS principal Derrick Reed, counselor Lois Coleman and teacher Sylvia Lamb and WCHS principal Rodney Smith, counselor Carla Smyth and teacher Theresa Vollor, who traveled to Huntsville, Ala., Jan. 20-21, to observe block scheduling (District 3 trustee James Stirgus dissenting); Warren Central Junior High School special education teacher Tracy Johnson, her class and several chaperones to travel to the Memphis Zoo March 18; the WCHS robotics team to attend a regional competition in New Orleans March 16-19, and, if they qualify, the national competition in St. Louis, Mo., April 26 to May 1; unspecified Dana Road Elementary School staff to attend the International Learning Disabilities Conference in Jacksonville, Fla., Feb. 23-26; Bowmar Avenue Elementary’s third-grade GATES class to visit the Aquarium of the Americas and Insectarium in New Orleans April 8; the VHS Pride Band to compete in the Heritage Festival at Six Flags Over Georgia in Atlanta May 5-7; and VHS assistant band director Kathryn Baugher to attend the Texas Music Educators Association Conference in San Antonio Feb. 9-12.

• Authorized the sale of surplus capital assets to the highest bidder, disposal of items for which no bids are received and deletion of a fixed asset reported stolen.

• Approved an agreement between the Port Gibson/Claiborne County Civil Defense and the VWSD.

• Tabled a decision on the make-up day for the weather-related school cancellation Jan 10.

• Approved a Child Nutrition department procurement plan.

• Approved a change of lessee on 16th Section property.

• Approved a VHS career and technical scholarship for $300 to be offered beginning this year to a graduating nontraditional, vocational student.

• Approved a request by Reed to submit a design for a VHS speciality license plate to the state Department of Revenue. The plate would cost $31, of which $22 would go to the school.

• Approved opening the bid process to improve the parking lot turnaround at Vicksburg Junior High School, the addition to the field house at WCHS and the gym floor and bleacher projects at VHS which were approved in October.

• Approved opening the bid process for purchasing WCHS band uniforms.

In closed session, the board:

• Acted on requests for student transfers.

• Heard a report of actions taken by the district discipline review committee.

• Considered suspending the expulsion of students who have been admitted to a non-district program being held at the alternative school.
