Ole Miss might have gotten a bigger challenge than it expected in its season-opening series against Wright State. The Rebels, though, also got a sweep.
Brett Huber worked out of a one-out, one-on jam in the eighth inning and pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save, as Ole Miss held off Wright State 6-5 Sunday afternoon in Oxford. It was the second consecutive one-run victory for the Rebels in the three-game series.
“You have to tip your hat to Wright State. They are very good and they are going to win a bunch of baseball games,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said. “I have to give credit to Brett Huber. He is a guy we can count on late in the game. He really showed us why he was an All-American last year. He didn’t have a good outing yesterday, but he was able to bounce back within 24 hours and win a ballgame.”
The teams traded runs early, until Ole Miss scored four in the sixth inning to take the lead for good. Miles Hamblin broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run single and Tanner Mathis added another two-run single with two outs to give the Rebels a 6-2 lead.
Wright State scored three runs in the eighth to pull within a run and bring a feeling of déjà vu to the Rebels. The Raiders scored four times in the eighth on Saturday to tie a game they eventually lost in 10 innings.
This time, Huber slammed the door. The sophomore entered with a runner on first and one out, but retired the next two batters with a groundout and a foul pop-up to escape the jam. He then set the Raiders down in order in the ninth for the save.
