The four years Mychal Ammons has been in Dellie C. Robinson’s starting lineup has also been four of the best years for Vicksburg High basketball.

In that span, the Gators advanced to the three state tournaments and posted a 103-25 record. Ammons’ senior season was the best of the four, with a trip to the Class 6A boys state championship game record and a 27-4 record.

Robinson, who has coached 19 years at Vicksburg, said Ammons’ run with the Gators ranks as the best of his career. And it should be no surprise that because of Ammons’ efforts, he was named the Vicksburg Post’s Player of the Year while Robinson earned another Vicksburg Post Coach of the Year honor.

‘It’s been great,” Robinson said of his journey with the 6-foot-6 Ammons, who will play next season for the University of South Alabama. “I’ve actually had Mike since the eighth grade. We brought him up at the end of his eighth-grade season and he’s been with me ever since. He’s been great to coach. He’s improved each year. He proved it in the playoffs. He had a phenomenal playoff run. He’s the best I’ve ever coached.”
