Ole Miss sweeps Kentucky

Ole Miss followed a familiar template to another victory over Kentucky.

The Rebels scored three runs in the seventh inning, then survived a rally by Kentucky in the ninth to win 6-5 on Sunday and finish a three-game sweep of the Wildcats in Oxford.

In all three games, Kentucky had the tying run in scoring position when the game ended. This time, Braden Kapteyn led off the ninth with a walk and was stranded at third when Brett Huber struck out Luke Maile to end the game.

“This was just like the previous two games — hard fought,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said. “I was really proud of how all weekend our guys handled adversity when it presented itself and were able to come back from behind today and get the win.”

Sunday’s win vaulted the Rebels (23-14, 8-7 SEC) back into contention in a suddenly crowded West Division race. Arkansas’ loss to Mississippi State on Sunday, combined with Ole Miss’ win and a pair of Alabama losses on Saturday, created a three-way tie atop the division. Auburn, which hosts Ole Miss in a three-game series beginning Thursday night, is another game back.

Ole Miss will also play in-state rival Mississippi State on Tuesday at Trustmark Park in the non-conference Governor’s Cup game.

“This sweep gives us a lift going into the week ahead to play Mississippi State in what will be an extremely tough game. Overall, I’m just proud of our guys,” Bianco said.

Alex Yarbrough and Will Allen each hit solo homers for Ole Miss, and Kapteyn hit a two-run shot for Kentucky (17-20, 2-13). Kapteyn’s homer was part of a five-run sixth that put the Wildcats up 5-3.

Ole Miss answered in the seventh. Yarbrough and Matt Smith started things off with back-to-back doubles to cut it to 5-4. Smith advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored the tying run on a fielder’s choice by Miles Hamblin. Taylor Hightower then delivered an RBI single to put the Rebels in front.

Eric Callendar earned the win for Ole Miss. He allowed three runs on three hits in two innings. Brett Huber pitched two score less innings to pick up his fourth save of the season.

“Huber was terrific on the mound and commanded the end of the game. Though we gave up five runs to them in the sixth, Eric Callender gave us a boost by getting one-two-three in the next inning,” Bianco said.
