A 14-year-old Utica boy chasing a basketball died Wednesday night after being hit by a car on Mississippi 27, authorities said.
Adrian Nelson, a seventh-grader at Siwell Middle School, was pronounced dead about 8 p.m. at the scene north of Old Port Gibson Road, said Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol Sgt. James Walker.
The cause of death was blunt-force trauma, said Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart.
The area where the accident occurred includes homes on both sides of the two-lane highway, said Grisham-Stewart. The highway is used regularly by vehicles as a link between Interstates 20 and 55, as well as local traffic.
Adrian was playing basketball with other youths when he was struck by a passenger car, Grisham-Stewart said.
Walker said this morning the driver of the 2002 Chevrolet that hit Adrian had not been cited but the investigation was continuing.
Accident reconstructionists reportedly were at the scene Thursday afternoon, but investigators could not be reached this morning.
