Couponing ‘I basically got them for free, only paying the sales tax’

As the Great Recession has taken its toll on family incomes and budgets, the word “coupon” has evolved from a noun to a verb.

“I’ve been couponing for about six months,” said Jen Chappell, a Vicksburg mother of five. “I saw one of the extreme couponing shows on TV and thought it was great.”

Chappell picked up some tips from the show and, putting them into practice, has seen a total household savings of about $500 a month. In addition, she has established a stockpile of items for her family to use.

“I probably have a year’s supply of toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, body wash and several food items,” she said. “I basically got them for free, only paying the sales tax.”
