On May 14, the 148th anniversary of the Battle of Champion Hill will take place at Champion Hill M.B. Church. The Champion Heritage Foundation is planning an all-day event.
Sid Johnson Champion V will host the commemoration of the May 16, 1863, battle fought on his great-great-grandparents’ land. The church is situated on property that, before the war, was the house site of Sid and Matilda Champion. During the Battle of Champion Hill, Gen. U.S. Grant claimed the Champions’ house as headquarters and later as a Union hospital. Following the Battle of Champion Hill and the Siege of Vicksburg, Union troops torched the house and the Champions were forced to leave.
The gates to the church, which is four miles west of Bolton on Champion Hill Road, will open at 8 a.m.
