M-Braves shut out by Jacksonville Suns

The Mississippi Braves’ shutout streak continued Tuesday, but in a bad way.

Joseph O’Gara allowed four hits and two walks in seven innings, and Jake Smolinski went 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI as the Jacksonville Suns beat the M-Braves 5-0 at Trustmark Park. It was Jacksonville’s second consecutive shutout in the series — and, oddly, followed two shutouts by the M-Braves.

Willie Cabrera had three hits, including a double, for Mississippi, but it left eight men on base.

Jacksonville got on the board in the fourth inning, when Kyle Skipworth drove in the game’s first run with a two-out single. Jorge Padilla’s RBI single and an RBI double by Smolinski made it 3-0 in the fifth, and the Suns iced the game with two more runs in the ninth.

J.J. Hoover, the Braves’ scheduled starter Tuesday, was promoted to Triple-A Gwinnett earlier in the day. His replacement, Brad Crim, lasted only 31⁄3 innings. Crim gave up one run on five hits, walked two and struck out two in his Double-A debut.

The series concluded today with an 11:05 a.m. matinee. The M-Braves then hit the road for a 10-game trip to Jackson and Tennessee beginning on Thursday.
