Ruffin Sledge Davis

Ruffin Sledge Davis, age 91, born in Como and formerly of Vicksburg, passed away Friday, June 10, 2011, at Talladega Health & Rehabilitation in Alabama, where he was residing.

The graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 18, 2011, at Friendship Cemetery in Como. A U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, Mr. Davis was a graduate of the University of Georgia and the University of Biarritz, France. He retired as a landscape architect with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Vicksburg and enjoyed collecting antique clocks, landscape architecture and painting.

An avid genealogist, he authored the book, “The Sledge Family of America.”

Mr. Davis is survived by his sweet sister, Prudie Swords of Nashville, Tenn.; daughters, Catherine Davis Shouse of Birmingham, Ala., and Minor Tait Ray; grandchildren, Patricia Shouse, Davis Shouse, Anna Catherine Shouse, Aric Ray and Nikki Tompkins Dayne; Bill and Kacky Mitchell and their children; Bill and Teresa Wallace and their son; and many more family members.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Holy Innocents Episcopal Church in Como or to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Arrangements were made by Ridout’s Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Ala.
