A dropped fly ball by right fielder Marc Krauss with two outs in the bottom of the eighth allowed Dan Nelson to score the go-ahead run as the Mississippi Braves defeated the BayBears 4-2 in front of 4,013 fans at Trustmark Park.

Nelson singled with two outs in the bottom of the eighth—the first M-Brave to reach base since Ernesto Mejia’s homer in the fourth. Donell Linares then reached second on the error, allowing Nelson to come in to score. Willie Cabrera followed with a single to drive in Linares.

Mississippi improved to 1-0 in the second half and 26-45 overall. Mobile fell to 0-1 and 38-33 overall with the loss. The M-Braves had four runs on six hits and an error while the BayBears managed two runs on five hits and one costly error.

Billy Bullock (1-0) came on to work the final two frames in relief, picking up his first win of the season. He struck out three in the contest.

Bryan Woodall (1-2) took the loss, giving up two unearned runs on two hits and two strikeouts in two innings pitched.

Back-to-back doubles from Kyler Newby and A.J. Pollock gave the BayBears a 1-0 lead in the top of the third.

Ryan Wheeler led off the top of the fourth with a ground-rule double before moving over to third on a wild pitch and scoring on a Ed Easley single to shallow right field.

Ernesto Mejia launched his 10th home run of the season, a two-run shot off the batter’s eye, to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth where the game remained until the decisive eighth inning.

Kenshin Kawakami started and went five frames for the M-Braves but did not factor in the decision. He gave up just two earned runs while fanning seven.
