John Earnest Evans Sr.

PORT GIBSON — John Earnest Evans Sr. died Tuesday, July 5, 2011, in Missouri City, Texas. He was 63.

Born in Yazoo City, Mr. Evans served in the Army and retired from the Mississippi National Guard. He was a graduate of Alcorn State University and retired from Waterways Experiment Station in 2010 after 25 years of service. He was a Little League and SWAC softball official.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charlie Evans; and a brother, Jimmy Huntley.

Survivors include his wife, Geraldine W. Evans of Port Gibson; his mother, Helen Huntley of Yazoo City; four daughters, Cassandra Evans-Jones, Tracey Armstead and Adele Bailes, all of Missouri City, and Felicia Jones of Vicksburg; two sons, John Earnest Evans Jr. and Vincent Burton, both of Missouri City; two brothers, Gwen Huntley of Manor, Texas, and Walter Earnest Jefferson of Jackson; nine grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter A.M.E. Church in Port Gibson with the Rev. Byram McKenzie officiating. Burial will follow at Thompson Memorial Garden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 until 6 p.m. Friday at Thompson Funeral Home and Saturday at the church from noon until the service.
