Three people were hospitalized Friday night after a wreck and subsequent car explosion, Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said.
Tommy Lee Friley, 20, 1163 Standard Hill Road, was a passenger in a 1995 Chevrolet Z71 pickup driven by Denise Carson, 41, 101 Wayne Drive, in the 500 block of Lake Shore Drive when the truck ran off the road, struck a utility pole and then a tree, Pace said. Denise Carson, Haley Carson, 14, and Kimberly Harrison, 16, were in the vehicle but uninjured.
After Friley was taken to River Region Medical Center, Johnnie Alexander, 28, 1701 South St., and Gregory Taylor Simmons, 15, 1763 Fisher Ferry Road, arrived at the scene of the wreck in a 1988 Nissan Pulsar to take the others home from the crash site, Pace said.
When getting ready to leave the scene, Pace said, the keys to the Nissan were misplaced. Pace also said a gas can in the back of the Nissan had leaked and soaked the car’s carpeting, and when one of the men lit a lighter to find the keys, the Nissan exploded. Haley Carson and Harrison were burned in the explosion and taken to the hospital, Pace said.
Condition reports for the three were unavailable Saturday night.
