It might be a little early yet to call Brett Oberholtzer a can’t miss prospect. Even so, he’s fast becoming an ace.
The left-hander allowed two runs and struck out five in six innings Saturday night to lead the Mississippi Braves to a 7-2 victory over the Jacksonville Suns.
It was the seventh consecutive start in which Oberholtzer has thrown at least six innings and the fourth in a row that he’s won. He has allowed two earned runs or less in each of his victories, and hasn’t given up more than two earned runs in a game since June 11.
Ernesto Mejia homered for the M-Braves and Antoan Richardson drove in two runs with a single. Mycal Jones went 3-for-5.
After taking a 2-0 lead in the second inning, Mejia made it a three-run game with his solo homer in the fourth. Jones singled and later scored on a base hit by Willie Cabrera in the fifth and Richardson’s single in the sixth made it 7-0.
Three relievers threw an inning apiece to finish off the M-Braves’ third win in five games.
The M-Braves and Suns finish their five-game series today at 2:05 p.m. in Jacksonville, then the M-Braves return home for a crucial five-game set against Mobile at Trustmark Park.
First-place Mobile (22-7) leads the M-Braves (14-15) by eight games in the Southern League’s South Division and swept a four-game series between the teams July 8-11. It’s also the last time Mobile and Mississippi will play this season.
