A wedge from 120 yards out on the par-4 15th set up a tap-in birdie and locked up the first Warren County golf championship for 21-year-old Chris Whittington on Sunday at Clear Creek Golf Course.
The excellent wedge on the 15th was one of several great shots from the final group on the back nine that featured Warren County’s four “Young Guns.” At 21, Whittington was the oldest of the group, which also had 18-year-old Chris Ingram and two 16-year-olds, Parker Rutherford and Nick Mekus.
Whittington, who had a five-stroke lead after his birdie at 15, gave up a pair of shots on the final two holes but still earned a three-shot win over Ingram with a 2-under 142. Ingram, who helped St. Aloysius to the Class 1A team state championship in May as a senior, ended with a 1 over par 145.
Rutherford had three birdies on the back nine to go with a triple bogey at 17 to finish six strokes back for third, at 148. Mekus tied for fourth with Nade Ellis with 151.
