Coach deserves thanks

Reading last Saturday’s letter from Alonzo Stevens as he begins his final season before retirement as head coach of the Vicksburg High School Gators brought a smile to my face.

It was typical Coach Stevens — gracious and sincere. It is we, the folks in the wider community who should be thanking him.

Coach Stevens has been instrumental in sending many to college on scholarship and even some to the pros. He has prepared through his own positive example countless young men for a productive life after football.

Coach Stevens has also given much time to the VHS chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Every year, the FCA gives special recognition to a coach in Mississippi who has had a strong Christian influence. That recognition is the Dave (Boo) Ferriss Influence Award.

Coach Stevens in his letter chose not to mention that on July 14 he was honored as the 2011 recipient.

So, Coach Stevens, thank you for 36 years of victories, great rivalries and, above all, the special care you have taken with your players to make them winners in the game that really counts. Vicksburg is a better place for it.
