A Vicksburg man was arrested by police Sunday for an armed robbery reported that morning, police Sgt. Sandra Williams said.

Johnny Earl Thomas, 27, 2213 Pearl St., was arrested at 6:33 a.m. while walking on South Street, said Williams.

Thomas is accused of robbing at gunpoint a man who had given him and a woman, 17, a ride after they flagged him down on Openwood Street around 12:30 a.m., said the sergeant.

The pair asked the victim to let them off at Cherry and China streets, where they joined two other men who were on the street. Thomas had a small-caliber handgun and demanded money, Williams said.

The victim, who was not hurt, gave them an undetermined amount of cash and called 911 after the four ran in an unknown direction.

Thomas was later identified from the description given by the victim, said Williams. He was being held in the Issaquena County Jail pending an initial hearing today.

The 17-year-old was not charged; the two other men have not yet been identified, said Williams, but the investigation is ongoing and additional arrests might be made.

The weapon was recovered.
