City closing books by shifting money

The Vicksburg Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved a list of budget amendments to the fiscal 2011 budget Wednesday topped by a total of $526,785 in pay raises, step increases and overtime pay.

The amendments totaled $674,910 in increases and the same number in decreases as the city closed out its books for the current fiscal year. The board is expected to approve the city’s $28.79 million 2012 general fund budget on Tuesday. The budget is about .59 percent less than the $28.96 million 2011 budget.

City accountant Doug Whittington said pay increases are listed as personnel in the amendments. They include the 3 percent raise for city employees approved by the board in December, step increases for such civil service employees as police and firefighters, and employee overtime accumulated during the 2011 flood.
