City approves $28.79 million budget

After twice delaying action last week, the Vicksburg Board of Mayor and Aldermen took only a few seconds Tuesday to approve the city’s $28.79 million fiscal 2012 budget.

The vote was 3-0, but Alderman Sid Beauman said he opposed two items: the budgets for NRoute and the Vicksburg Tallulah Regional Airport.

The board approved $135,000 for NRoute, the city’s public transportation system, and $46,500 for VTR, which is supported by a partnership of Vicksburg and Warren County and Madison County and Tallulah in Louisiana. The same amounts were approved for fiscal 2011.

“I support the budget, but I’m opposed to the NRoute and VTR budgets,” Beauman said.

Mayor Paul Winfield said NRoute provides a service for the elderly and the poor, adding, “we need to keep it going.”

“I think NRoute is a good program, but I’ve got problems with the management,” Beauman said.
