Alcorn flies past Valley with second half surge

Brandon Bridge passed for two touchdowns and ran for a third as Alcorn State coasted to a 39-14 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Saturday.

Alcorn (1-2, 1-2 Southwestern Athletic Conference) led 10-7 at halftime but scored four touchdowns in the second half to trounce Mississippi Valley State (0-3, 0-2).

Alcorn State got two long second-half touchdown passes from two different quarterbacks. Bridge, who completed 7 of 16 attempts for 148 yards, hit Rodney Whitmore on a 72-yard scoring pass. Darius Smith, who was 7-for-11 for 144 yards, found Terrance Lewis for a 55-yard TD. Jerry Salas also caught a 5-yard scoring pass from Bridge.

Trey Bateaste rushed for 118 yards and Garrick Jones passed for a touchdown for Mississippi Valley State.

The Delta Devils have been outscored 119-23 in their three games so far this season.

Delta State 47, Arkansas Tech 32

Micah Davis completed 34 of 60 passes for 419 yards and four touchdowns to lead Delta State (2-1) past Arkansas Tech (1-2).

Davis threw three touchdown passes to Chance Dennis, who finished with 12 receptions for 155 yards.

Arkansas Tech took a 32-27 lead on a 14-yard TD pass from Preston Conder to A.J. Whitmore with 11:02 left in the game. Davis tossed a 33-yard TD pass to Dennis to put Delta State back in front less than two minutes later, and the Statesmen added two more scores in the last nine minutes to ice it.

Mississippi College 45, Hardin-Simmons 28

Mississippi College’s defense forced five turnovers and Steven Knight scored four touchdowns as the Choctaws beat Hardin-Simmons.

Knight ran for 181 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries, and caught four passes for 44 yards and another score. Mississippi College led 21-14 at halftime, then scored 24 straight points to pull away.

JSU 28, Southern 24

Casey Therriault threw for 261 yards and two touchdowns as Jackson State rallied to beat Southern University.

Trailing 24-21 with 4:36 to play, Therriault threw a 12-yard TD pass to Rico Richardson to give Jackson State (3-0, 1-0 SWAC) a 28-24 lead. The touchdown capped a seven play, 65-yard drive that completed the Tigers’ comeback and left Southern (1-2, 1-1) with only 1:32 left.

Jackson State recorded a sack and forced three incompletions on Southern’s next possession, sealing the win.

The Tigers’ rushing attack controlled the clock as they racked up 155 yards. B.J. Lee led the way, rushing for 81 yards on 13 carries.

Dray Joseph threw three touchdowns but only completed one pass in the fourth quarter and Southern’s rushing attack struggled to get anything going, as JSU held the Jaguars to 19 yards.
