Vikings open region play at undefeated Northwest Rankin

On paper, Warren Central has little chance of upsetting Northwest Rankin on Friday night.

Northwest enters the game with a perfect record against tough competition, is ranked fourth in Class 6A in this week’s Mississippi Associated Press poll, and has one of the state’s best running backs with Ramone Nash, who has rushed for 710 yards and nine touchdowns.

Warren Central has history on its side.

The last six games in the series have been decided by a total of 41 points. Even when Northwest Rankin (4-0) has seemingly had the upper hand in talent, like last season, WC has kept it close.

The Vikings had a 10-point lead in the second half at Viking Stadium before Northwest scored twice in the last five minutes to win.

Warren Central coach Josh Morgan is hoping his team’s history of nailbiters against the Cougars can give it an edge on Friday.
