One week after Vicksburg quarterback Cameron Cooksey’s record-smashing performance against Northwest Rankin in a 42-40 loss, the Gators seek a followup performance Friday when they travel to Greenville-Weston.
For Vicksburg coach Alonzo Stevens, the game with the Hornets (1-5, 0-2) represents a key turning point in the season for his team.
“Can we turn the corner Friday night?,” Stevens asked. “Against Northwest Rankin, we rose to the occasion and took one of the top teams in the state down to the last play. But now, can we come back?”
Cooksey had the best single game in the nation this season against Northwest Rankin, according to Maxpreps.com. His 48 completions and 68 attempts are national and state highs this season. The 569 yards are the second highest in the nation and best in the state this season. He added six touchdown passes. It is still unknown where those numbers rank all-time in the state because of the hazy maze of the state’s record-keeping process.
