Delta State slips past Boll Weevils

A short week of preparation was no obstacle for Delta State. Neither was Arkansas-Monticello.

Delta State rolled up 526 yards of total offense, Dominique Davenport returned one of his two interceptions for a touchdown, and Delta State earned a 34-20 victory over he Boll Weevils on Thursday night in Cleveland.

Micah Davis completed 26 of 32 passes for 316 yards and two touchdowns for the Statesmen (6-1), who won their fifth consecutive game. Davis also rushed for 68 yards and a touchdown.

Delta State took control of the game with 21 points in the second quarter. After Damon Wicker tossed an 11-yard TD pass to Willie Landers to put Arkansas-Monticello (3-3) ahead 14-7, Davis tied it up with a 2-yard TD pass to Jacob Sesma.

Brant Botill’s 3-yard TD run with 5:59 to play in the half gave Delta State the lead, then Davenport returned an interception 33 yards for another score to make it 28-14 with 1:23 to go.

Davis threw another TD pass late in the fourth quarter to pad the lead.

Wicker completed 24 of 32 passes for 293 yards and two touchdowns, but had a tough night. He was sacked six times and threw three interceptions. Arkansas-Monticello also lost a fumble inside the Delta State 10-yard line in the fourth quarter.
