A Vicksburg woman and a Tennessee man were airlifted to a Jackson hospital after a head-on collision Friday evening on Oak Ridge Road.

Cynthia M. Grantham, 53, 3778 Oak Ridge Road, was in critical condition at University of Mississippi Medical Center, hospital spokesman Bruce Coleman said. A condition for Frank G. Whitaker, 25, 3402 Old Hickory Blvd., Old Hickory, Tenn., was not available Friday night.

Grantham, who was wearing a seat belt, was southbound on Oak Ridge Road around 6 p.m. when her 2007 GMC Yukon was struck head-on by a northbound 1993 Chevrolet 3500 pickup, driven by Whitaker, Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said.

Witnesses told Pace that Whitaker was driving at a high rate of speed before coming to a sharp curve in the 2400 block of Oak Ridge Road — about 100 yards south of Henry Road, Pace said. Whitaker’s vehicle left the roadway and over-corrected before colliding with Grantham’s SUV, Pace said.

Pace said it was not known if Whitaker was wearing a seat belt.

Criminal charges against Whitaker could result from the wreck investigation, Pace said.
