Warren County’s jobless rate fell four-tenths of a percent in September along with similar drops statewide and nationally, according to seasonally adjusted figures from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.

Local unemployment was 11.3 percent for the month, down from 11.7 percent in September. Mississippi’s rate was 10.2 percent, also down four-tenths for the month. Adjusted for seasonal factors in the workplace, the rate was unchanged at 10.6 percent. The state figure for October 2010 was 9.8 percent. The nation’s unadjusted rate for this September was 8.5 percent, down three-tenths for the month.

The local rate was aided by fewer unemployed — 2,410 compared to 2,530 in September — but reflected 21,280 people on the labor force, down from a revised 21,610. Statewide, the number of people listed as unemployed in October fell to 138,700, down from a revised 144,200. Most job growth came in manufacturing, government and educational and health services. Leisure and hospitality lost the most in October.

Rankin County registered the state’s lowest jobless rate at 6.6 percent followed by Madison County at 7.2 percent. The highest rates were 19.1 percent in Clay County and 17.1 percent in Holmes County.

Claiborne and Sharkey counties recorded lower rates for the month, with Claiborne down six-tenths of a point to 16.3 percent and Sharkey nearly a full point to 10.6 percent. Issaquena County’s rate increased by a tenth, to 12.4 percent.
