Lady Flashes fall short

As good as the St. Aloysius defense was Tuesday night, its offense was that bad. The Lady Flashes could not capitalize on the turnovers they created all game long against St. Andrew’s.

The Lady Flashes forced 26 turnovers and held the Lady Saints to just 25 field goal attempts. St. Andrew’s, however, made its shots count and also made enough free throws to take a 33-18 win at St. Al.

The Lady Flashes attempted to become the only Warren County team to have a winning record going into Thanksgiving break. Instead, they fall to 2-3 after their most frustrating loss of the season.

First-year St. Al coach Cookie Johnson could only shake her head at the missed opportunities. Johnson’s offense, which she ran well under Donny Fuller at Warren Central that got her team plenty of open looks. The Lady Flashes took 51 shots, but made just eight.

“We could not buy a shot,” Johnson said. “We hustled all night and played good defense. We executed our plays, kind of, meaning we couldn’t make a basket. If we could put two and two together, we will win games.”

St. Al made two of its first three shots in the opening minutes to grab a 4-3 lead. St. Andrew’s (1-5) answered with a 14-2 run that closed out the first quarter and extended into the second quarter.

An Ellie Welp basket finally broke the ice, but it was also the only score the Lady Flashes got in the second quarter.

Johnson went to a full-court press in the third quarter and the energy got the Lady Flashes even more shots and even more misses. Ann Garrison Thomas led St. Al with 10 points, grabbed six rebounds and had six steals.

St. Andrew’s coach Berney King was glad to see his team avenge an earlier loss to St. Al two weeks ago.

“Our defense was extremely good,” King said. “I really felt we affected their shots and we executed our plan.”

The Lady Saints salted away their victory by hitting six of eight free throws to start the fourth quarter that boosted the margin to 15 points.

Jasmine McNair led St. Andrew’s with 13 points and Claudia Brunson had 11. Welp finished with four points and 10 rebounds for St. Al, which is now off until next week’s tournament at Hillcrest Christian.
