Burn survivor set to share story at Calvary Baptist Church Sunday

Billy Jack McDaniel would like to feel his daughter kiss him on the cheek — but he can’t.

“I can feel the pressure,” but not the sensation, said the burn survivor.

McDaniel, a native of the south Mississippi city of Laurel, was just a regular guy, working on an oil rig in Texas. But in 2006, he was engulfed in 2,500- to 2,800-degree flames for 15 seconds and experienced third-degree burns on 95 percent of his body.

Doctors looked at him, saying, “I can’t explain why you are alive,” he said. “But I’m alive.”

McDaniel will share his story at 11 Sunday morning at Calvary Baptist Church. Later in the day, at 6, he will speak at Hickory Ridge Baptist Church, 1124 Mulican Road, Florence.

McDaniel said there was a point at which he questioned staying alive.
