A 74-year-old Vicksburg man was charged Wednesday with the statutory rape of a child younger than 16, Sheriff Martin Pace said.

Donald Russell, 5125 Warriors Trail, was arrested at 3 p.m. when he voluntarily went to the Warren County Sheriff’s Department to speak with investigators Stacy Rollison and Todd Dykes, Pace said.

Russell is not related to the victim, said the sheriff, but is an acquaintance of her family and is currently being charged with one incident, he said.

Pace said the investigation began last week but would not disclose details, citing the need to protect the victim.

Russell was being held in the Warren County Jail this morning without bond pending an initial hearing in justice court.
