Warren Central followed up its good showing Thursday against defending Class 6A champion Madison Central by bashing St. Andrew’s 11-0 Saturday morning at the Lady Vikes Invitational.
The Lady Vikes (3-5) scored eight runs in the bottom of the first as St. Andrew’s pitcher Brittney Mitchell issued six walks and hit a batter. The Lady Saints also had two errors, including a dropped fly ball in center field that allowed two runs to score.
Krista Cortezie, who finished with two hits and an RBI, said the Lady Vikes rode the momentum from their 8-2 loss to Madison Central. WC was down just 4-2 after four innings against the defending champs.
“It boosted our confidence to play that well against a good team like Madison Central,” Cortezie said.
Darby Gain, who pitched the first four innings at Madison Central before being relieved, had no trouble against St. Andrew’s. She struck out the side in the first inning. She gave up a hit and hit a batter in the second, before coming back with her fourth strikeout and a ground out to end the inning.
Warren Central padded its lead with three runs in the second. Mackenzie Page and Megan Marbury led off with hits down the first base line. Page later scored on a passed ball, while Marbury came in on Victoria Fothergil’s single to right field. Cortezie followed with a single to left to knock in Brooke Patterson for an 11-0 lead.
The game was called after two innings because of the tournament’s one-hour time limit.
Katie Busby and Brooke Patterson scored two runs each for the Lady Vikes, who went on to beat St. Aloysius 2-0 in their second game of the day.
Gain allowed one hit and struck out two in the three-inning victory over St. Al. Busby had two hits and scored two runs.
