It was back to the pinstripes for St. Aloysius Friday night.

Donning the uniforms that they wore on their way to two Class 1A championships, the Flashes recaptured some much needed magic at Bazinsky Field.

Senior right-handed pitcher Josh Eargle responded with the Flashes’ best game of the season, tossing a three-hitter to beat Bogue Chitto 7-1 in a key Division 7-1A game.

The win evened St. Al’s division record at 1-1 but, more importantly, snapped a three-game losing streak. The last two losses were by one run.

“This was a big confidence booster,” Eargle said. “We really needed it. It was our first complete game.”

St. Al coach Derrik Boland said his team bought into the message of playing every out.

“We competed for all seven innings,” Boland said.

No one more so than Eargle, who needed just 71 pitches to clamp down on the Bobcats (6-5, 1-1).

“Talk about that kid,” Boland said. “To bounce back from two tough outings where he didn’t get a win. We needed that.”

Two weeks ago, Eargle took a 5-2 lead into the seventh inning against Riverside. He issued a pair of walks, was pulled and left with a no-decision. Riverside went on to rally for nine runs and won 11-8. Four days later in Meridian, St. Al lost a pair of eight-run leads to Puckett and fell 11-10. Eargle got the loss.

Eargle put the disappointments out of his mind and delivered a gem.

“I went out and kept my front shoulder down. That gave me a little more tilt and that helped me the most,” Eargle said.

The adjustment induced Bogue Chitto to hit a lot of pop-ups and harmless ground balls. Through five innings, the Bobcats had just two baserunners, off a double and a walk. Eargle got six outs by pop-up, three by ground ball, three fly outs and three strikeouts.

Up 3-0, the Flashes got another run in the bottom of the fifth when Patrick Murphy reached on a two-base error after a bunt. He went to third on a wild pitch and scored when catcher Hunter Ginn’s throw to second base went into center field.

Bogue Chitto got its lone run in the sixth when Ginn singled in Colton McClendon, who had reached on a fielder’s choice. St. Al alertly cut off a throw from center and was able to nail Ginn as he tried to take second. That got Eargle and the Flashes out of the inning, up 4-1.

George Tzotzolas started a Flashes’ rally in the bottom of the sixth with a hit to right field that got misplayed. His courtesy runner, Jacob Breeden, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball.

Matt Foley and Murphy followed with walks. Matt Mims singled to left to score both for a 7-1 lead.

Eargle allowed a one-out hit to Shiloh Martin in the seventh, but struck out Zach Avants to end the game.

St. Al strung together four hits in the bottom of the second to grab a 3-0 lead and knock Bogue Chitto starting pitcher Steven Ginn out of the game. Matt Bell and Neal Ricks had RBI singles and Murphy drove in the last run with a sacrifice fly.

St. Al (5-10) finished with eight hits. Tzotzolas had two to lead the way and Murphy scored two runs.

Hunter Ginn had two hits for Bogue Chitto.
