A Cary father of a toddler died on Easter Sunday in a single-car wreck about three miles east of Mayersville, officials said.
Jeffrey L. Gibbs, 25, was headed west on Mississippi 14 in a 2003 Oldsmobile Alero around 6:45 a.m. when the car veered off the road, hit a pole and overturned, said Cpl. Odis Easterling, spokesman for the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol.
The car ended up in a field and Gibbs was ejected, said Issaquena County Deputy Willie Peterson.
Easterling said Gibbs, who was alone in the car, was not wearing a seat belt.
Issaquena County Coroner Angela Williams pronounced Gibbs dead at the scene. Williams would not release the cause of death, pending autopsy results she said could be returned today.
Gibbs was the father of a 7-month old daughter, Jada, with his girlfriend LaTonzia Evans, 23, of Mayersville, said Issaquena County Deputy Preston Evans, LaTonzia Evans’ father.
Gibbs, who was a student at Alcorn State University studying business administration was believed to be on his way to her home from Rolling Fork, Preston Evans said. He was polite and very well-liked, said Evans.
The cause of the wreck remains under investigation, said Easterling.
