Fire damages home while woman at vet

A Warren County woman’s ailing pet might have prevented her from being injured in a house fire Monday.
Barbara Calvin, 66, 520 Watkins Road, said she had left home minutes earlier to take her dog, “Girl,” to the vet when a neighbor called to say her house was on fire.
Initial reports, just before noon, were that a resident was in the home, said Kelly Worthy, coordinator of the county’s volunteer fire departments.
“We were more concerned for her,” said next-door neighbor Carla Whitney. “She’s always at home every day so we were afraid she was in there.”
No injuries were reported. Linda Larry, who lives across the street, said she saw flames and smoke coming out of roof vents and called 911. It was not clear who called Calvin, who has lived in the house for more than 25 years, but she returned immediately and stood with the dog in her arms.
Firefighters had the blaze under control in about 30 minutes.
Worthy said the fire started “in the kitchen-living room area,” but the cause remained under investigation.
Firefighters from Fisher Ferry, Bovina and Culkin volunteer fire departments responded.
