Comcast Cable will pay an additional $3,470 to Warren County to lay part of a fiber optic cable across the U.S. 80 bridge.
The cable company and the Vicksburg Bridge Commission agreed Wednesday to the new rate and a route change for the cable, which the company has said will be a backup communications link between its Monroe and Jackson markets.
No plans exist to extend service to Vicksburg, where Vicksburg Video holds the franchise for cable television service inside the city and parts slightly beyond.
The extra rent amount is based on amendments to previous contracts to run communications technology along bridge property, such as with AT&T, commissioners said. The line will run just south of the bridge office and pass through switching stations on its way east of Vicksburg
Comcast agreed in October to pay the county $30,000 upfront and about $314,000 over 10 years to use the bridge as a trellis for the line. Annual fees grow 3 percent through October 2020 and the company is barred from selling or subletting the cable without permission from the county.
