Electricity expected to be restored in north county today

Power was expected to be fully restored this morning in the Openwood Plantation and Fairways subdivisions, darkened Sunday evening by downed electrical lines from a fallen pecan tree, Entergy spokesman Don Arnold said.

Crews worked through the night to replace wires, four power poles and a crossbar broken when the tree fell shortly after 5 p.m., Arnold said.

“It was a nightmare,” Arnold said. “We had a lot of fencing we had to take down and some structures and other things (in backyards) we had to move to get access.”

“Close to 200 homes” were affected by the outage, Arnold said.

Power lines run through the backyards of homes in that area, officials said. Most are underground but feeder lines lead into them.

Fences and outbuildings at Openwood, built in the 1960s, and Fairways, in the 1980s and 1990s, were installed after the power polls and lines in the neighborhoods in north Warren County off Oak Ridge Road.

Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said emergency officials received multiple calls after the tree fell in the backyard of a home in the 1200 block of Newit Vick Drive.

“As the tree fell, the pressure it put on the lines broke several utility poles in that series,” Pace said.

A deputy patrolled the area all night, he added, and no injuries or crime were reported. Firefighters with the Culkin Volunteer Fire Department also responded, Pace said.

“We were concerned about what those lines would energize,” he added. “Our main concern was to keep people out of the area.”

Crews were expected to reinstall fencing and make other repairs after electricity is back on.

Arnold said telephone service also appeared to be affected. A representative with AT&T did not return a call.
