Residents interested in participating in a pilot recycling program sponsored by the City of Vicksburg may attend an orientation meeting today at 5:30 p.m. in the board room at the City Hall Annex, 1415 Walnut St.

The program, which begins Tuesday, is funded by a $25,000 Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality grant the city received in July.

The city is looking for 300 residents living between Cherry Street, Eisenhower Drive, East Avenue and Chambers Street who are interested in participating in the program, said Marie Thompson, director of policy for the city.

Lidded, 18-gallon plastic bins for recycling paper and such No. 1 and 2 plastics as soft drink, milk and liquid soap containers will be distributed at tonight’s meeting.

If needed, a makeup program will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 5 at Glenwood Circle.

The recyclables will be collected on Tuesdays and taken to MIDD-West Industries on Smokey Lane to be sorted and baled.
