Southern Miss’ offensive output has been less than stellar lately.

Luckily, Andrew Pierce has been pitching like he’s out of this world.

Austin Roussel drove in the game’s only runs with a single in the top of the eighth inning, and Pierce threw eight shutout innings as Southern Miss beat Marshall 2-0 on Friday.

It was the fifth straight game in which Southern Miss (24-17, 8-5 Conference USA) has scored two runs or fewer, but it has won four of them. All of the victories have come in C-USA games.

Pierce has allowed just one earned run in his last 311⁄3 innings. He scattered five hits and three walks, and struck out seven in Friday’s game.

Bradley Roney retired the side in order in the ninth for his eighth save of the season.

Marshall’s Aaron Blair retired the first 14 batters he faced and took a no-hitter into the eighth inning. Ashley Graeter led off the eighth by reaching on an error, then Travis Creel broke up the no-hit bid with an infield single.

Creel took second base on defensive indifference, then Roussel singled inside the first base bag to give Southern Miss the 2-0 lead. The hits by Creel and Roussel were the only ones USM had in the game.

Nathan Gomez had three hits for Marshall (14-27, 2-11).

Tulane 4, ECU 1

Former Hinds Community College star Nick Schneeberger went 3-for-5, and Andrew Reeves allowed one unearned run in seven innings as Tulane (28-14, 6-7 C-USA) beat East Carolina (27-15-1, 9-6-1) in the opener of a three-game series.

Reeves scattered six hits and two walks, and struck out two to earn his first win of the season. D.J. Ponder pitched two scoreless innings for his seventh save.

Schneeberger had his 24th multi-hit game of the season.

LSU 6, Georgia 5

Austin Nola hit a two-run home run to break a 4-all tie in the eighth inning and give LSU a win over Georgia (24-19, 8-11 SEC).

JaCoby Jones hit a two-run bomb for LSU (34-9, 13-6). Chris Cotton earned the win in two innings of scoreless relief with two strikeouts.

Florida 3, Arkansas 2

Second-ranked Florida rallied from a 2-0 deficit with a three-run sixth inning to earn a win over Arkansas at McKethan Stadium. The Gator bullpen worked three scoreless innings in the opener of the teams’ weekend series.

After being held hitless into the sixth by Razorback sophomore Ryne Stanek (6-3), the Gators tied the game on a two-out, two-run double by freshman Casey Turgeon and seized the lead on an RBI single by junior Austin Maddox.
