Dorothy Mae Lee Coleman

Dorothy Mae Lee Coleman died Friday, April 27, 2012, at River Region Medical Center. She was 85.

A Tallulah native, Mrs. Coleman was born March 23, 1927, to Arthur Lee Sr. and Dollie McHighland Lee. She was reared by her paternal grandmother, Bessie Williams Fox.

She was a former member of Pleasant Grove No. 1 Baptist Church in Tallulah and was a member and mother of New Hope M.B. Church, where she had served as a financial clerk and Sunday school teacher and superintendent.

She graduated from high school in Berkeley, Calif., and worked at Oakland Army Base. She received a bachelor’s degree in business education and a master’s degree, both from Southern University. She completed further studies at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, University of Louisiana at Monroe and Grambling State University.

She taught for 35 years, including at Wright Elementary, Reuben McCall High School and the Vocational Technology School of Tallulah.

Mrs. Coleman was an honorary matron of the Pride of Heart No. 8 Order of Eastern Star and past grand secretary of the Queen Vashti Grand Chapter Order of Eastern Star. She had served as most worthy ancient grand matron of the Heroines of Jericho and vice grand matron of the Daughters of Sphinx.

She was past president of the Madison Parish Historical Society and had served on the Madison Parish Council on Aging, Delta Community Action Board and Madison Parish Hospital Board. She was a member of the Madison Parish Retired Teachers, American Legion, Rose Bud Garden Club and numerous other organizations.

She was preceded in death by her husband, H.C. Coleman; one grandson, Kevin Maurice Coleman; and three sisters, Dollie Mae Lee Gibson, Rosa Ann Lynch and Bessie Mae Lee Cannon.

Survivors include one daughter, Evelyn Delories Coleman Jones of Jeaner-ette, La.; one son, Dr. Quentin Charles Coleman of Fort Washington, Md.; one brother, the Rev. Arthur Lee Jr. of Tempe, Ariz.; two sisters, Wilma Hollins of Houston, Texas, and Clara Caston Lynch of Winnsboro, La.; and nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Tallulah Community Center, 800 N. Beech St., under the direction of McFarland Funeral Homes of Delhi, La.
