Alcorn St., Jackson St. roll in SWAC tournament

Desmond Russell threw a complete-game, six-hit shutout to lead Jackson State to a 7-0 victory over Texas Southern in the the opening round of the SWAC Baseball Tournament in Baton Rouge.

The top-seeded JSU Tigers scored six of their seven runs in their final three at-bats to secure the victory and protect the gem being tossed by Russell.

Frank Solis and Charles Epperson had a pair of hits apiece for JSU. Jose Cruz drove in a pair of runs as well. Jackson State will play Prairie View in the winner’s bracket today at 6 p.m.

Miss. Valley St. 6, Southern 4

Joseph Germaine drove in five runs in the final two innings to lead Mississippi Valley State to an upset victory over Southern in the opening round.

Mississippi Valley State plays Alcorn State in today’s winner’s bracket game at 3 p.m.

Alcorn St. 6, Grambling 2

The Braves spotted GSU two early runs, but answered with a single run in the fifth and took the lead for good with a three-run sixth. Steve Easter pitched a complete game to get the win for the Braves.

Justin Barney drove in two runs for Alcorn State.
