Special Blood Drive Friday for Vicksburg woman

Published 4:02 pm Wednesday, May 23, 2012

A blood drive is planned for Friday for a 23-year-old Vicksburg woman suffering from a rare blood disorder.

Mississippi Blood Service’s Donor Coach will be at Walmart Friday from noon to 6 p.m. Donors must be older than 17, or 16 with parental consent, weigh at least 110 pounds and have ID.

Chelsea Alatorre, who has used 120 units of blood within the last two weeks, suffers from a rare, lifelong illness known as thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. TTP interferes with the blood’s clotting.

The most effective treatment is plasmaphersis, which requires patient’s own plasma and donor plasma. Plasma is the liquid part of the blood and one of the blood components taken from whole blood donations.

She will need 15 units of plasma a day during her treatment and she will need the plasma from 15 donors a day.
